The lives of three different women share a common bond: adoption. Karen (Annette Bening) is a physical therapist who is haunted by the fact that, as a teenager, she gave up her daughter for adoption. Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) was raised by adoptive parents and is now a successful lawyer, although her personal life lacks warmth.
